Barnegat, NJ is a large township in Ocean County with a total area of 40.5 square miles. As of the 2010 census, the population of Barnegat Township is just under 21,000 residents. Jeffrey Melchiondo is the current mayor of this municipality. In 1609, the township derived its name from Dutch settlers as "Barnegat," because of the Barnegat Bay and Barnegat Inlet, which both lie near the township. Barnegat is a hub of major state and county highways, making traveling to and from the township very easy. The Garden State Parkway (GSP), Route 72, County Route 539 and U.S. Route 9 are all less than ten minutes away.
